Lyrics for "Jack's Lament"
from
The Nightmare before Christmas
There are few who'd deny, at what I do I am the best
For my talents are renowned far and wide
When it comes to surprises in the moonlit night
I excel without ever even trying
With the slightest little effort of my ghostlike charms
I have seen grown men give out a shriek
With the wave of my hand, and a well-placed moan
I have swept the very bravest off their feet
Yet year after year, it's the same routine
And I grow so weary of the sound of screams
And I, Jack, the Pumpkin King
Have grown so tired of the same old thing
Oh, somewhere deep inside of these bones
An emptiness began to grow
There's something out there, far from my home
A longing that I've never known
I'm the master of fright, and a demon of light
And I'll scare you right out of your pants
To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mister Unlucky
And I'm known throughout England and France
And since I am dead, I can take off my head
To recite Shakespearean quotations
No animal nor man can scream like I can
With the fury of my recitations
But who here would ever understand
That the Pumpkin King with the skeleton grin
Would tire of his crown, if they only understood
He'd give it all up if he only could
Oh, there's an empty place in my bones
That calls out for something unknown
The fame and praise come year after year
Does nothing for these empty tears
The Nightmare before Christmas
There are few who'd deny, at what I do I am the best
For my talents are renowned far and wide
When it comes to surprises in the moonlit night

With the slightest little effort of my ghostlike charms

Oboe
This oboe player would have to know fingering patterns to get the various sounds . This picture below has the fingering patterns written in one chart. It is always useful to have a fingering chart on hand to look any fingering you have forgotten, especially the notes you play infrequently.

A Musical Joke
A C, an E-flat, and a G go into a bar. The bartender says: "Sorry, but we don't serve minors." So, the E-flat leaves, and the C and the G have an open fifth between them.
After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished and the G is out flat. An F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.
A D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom saying, "Excuse me. I'll just be a second."
An A comes into the bar, but the bartender is not convinced that this relative of C is not a minor. Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and exclaims: "Get out now! You're the seventh minor I've found in this bar tonight."
The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back to the bar the next night in a 3-piece suit with nicely shined shoes. The bartender (who used to have a nice corporate job until his company downsized) says: "You're looking sharp tonight, come on in! This could be a major development."
This proves to be the case, as the E-flat takes off the suit, and everything else, and stands there au natural.
Eventually, the C sobers up, and realizes in horror that he's under a rest.
The C is brought to trial, is found guilty of contributing to the diminution of a minor, and is sentenced to 10 years of DS without Coda at an upscale correctional facility.
On appeal, however, the C is found innocent of any wrongdoing, even accidental, and that all accusations to the contrary are bassless.
The bartender decides, however, that since he's only had ten or so patrons, the sop rano out in the bathroom, and everything has become alto much treble, he needs a rest—and closes the bar
If you don't understand this joke then you need This

Bassoon
Take a look at how you hold the bassoon and where your hands should go. In all wind instruments the left hand is higher than the right hand. So the bassoon is no exception.
Bassoon players are sought after for many musical groups as there are not so many players. Hence there is potential to go a long way!! Are you game?

"The methods and suggestions in this book are pinpoint accurate. Among the Horn world, I would have to say this is the most popular and recommended book. The book varies to all subjects of music and gives great pointers. If you have any trouble playing the Horn, this book has something for you."
People have reported that the french horn is more difficult than most brass to play because it requires good pitch recognition and has a more difficult mouthpiece. Also, some people believe that it is easier to master the french horn if you have played another instrument especially another brass instrument. Other people believe that if you are prepared to put in the effort and practise then it does not matter if the freanch horn is your first or second ( or.... instrument ) as your determination will help you succeed, especially if you pick up a book like "Art Of French Horn Playing" to help you.
Also as not so many people play the french horn as instruments like the trumpet, violin, flute, clarinet and guitar, then it will be easier to progress into orchestras, bands etc. These other instrumentalists will most likely have to audition and even if you are a very good player can miss out due to the large numbers who play.

French Horn
Philip Farkas was born to non musical parents on March 5, 1914 and died December 21, 1992. He was the principal horn player in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for many years and left in 1960 to join the music faculty at Indiana University Bloomington. He wrote The Art of French Horn Playing which is a great book for horn players.
Here is one persons review.

The Trumpet
There are different types of trumpet. The most common trumpet is the trumpet in B flat. Most composers will produce music for this instrument. However ther are other trumpets in variable keys.
There is a trumpet in:
~ low F - a contralto trumpet used for some Russian music
~ low C - a bass trumpet with a deep sound like a horn and built for the orchestral music in Wagner's series of operas, The Ring of the Nibelungs
~ in D - also known as the Bach Trumpet often made with a straight tube
~ in high D - used in some works by Stravinsky and Ravel
~ in high F - another instrument used for the rapid trumpet music of Bach.

Many choirs sing the Messiah including the Hallelujah Chorus all over the world.
People have also arranged it into their own style eg Mervyn Warren, who was a member of the all male sextet Take 6, arranged and produced an updated gospel version. It is performed by a choir of all-star gospel, contemporary Christian, Rhythm and Blues and jazz singers, along with several actors and conducted by Quincy Jones.
Personal Review:
This version of the Hallelujah Chorus conducted by Quincy Jones is a great improvement to the original Hallelujah Chorus because of its gospal singing and upbeat rhythem. I prefer this version more than the original because of the rhythmic difference and the change of instruments eg. Piano, Trumpet, Drum Kit.
What Someone Else Thought of this version
"The best masterpiece, however is the Hallelujah Chorus. It must be played loud, in the house, in the car, in the office, or anywhere else. It is the most inspiring music I have ever heard. Somewhere, Handel is smiling and marvelling at what has come from the wonder which he penned two centuries ago.
Everyone should own this disc!"

Metalcore Bands
If you play in a metal band then the music is likely to be loud. Therefore you need to protect your ears with some ear plugs. If you continue to play without ear protection then it is possible to end up with Tinnitus which is simply ringing in the ear. And this ringing could be constantly.
If you play in a metal band then you need inspiration. This could be by Listening to Other Metal Bands and wearing the band t-shirts.
For example Australian Metalcore Bands such as:
~ I Killed the Prom Queen
I Killed The Prom Queen (initally called Child Left Burning ) was formed in 2000 and are from Adelaide, South Australia. They were one of the first Australian metalcore bands to reach a wider audience. They are vegans and are against animal cruelty.
~ Parkway Drive

Parkway Drive was formed in 2002 and are from Byron Bay, New South Wales.
~ Switchblade

Spot the difference
VIOL FAMILY
These are a group of bowed, string instruments developed in the Renaissance period ( 14th to 16th centuries ) and then superceded by the violin or string family. However the instruments are revived today for performance of early music.
Viols came in four different sizes, just like the modern string family and were called treble, alto tenor and bass. A group of viols was called a consort or chest which usually consisted of six instruments. A wealthy family often had a chest of viols.
They resembled that of a later violin but had flat back, ridges called frets, and C-shaped soundholes. Notice this difference in the above pictures of the violone and double bass.
They usually had six strings but some had five strings eg french viols.
The bow had a large outward curve and was held above the hand as opposed to the violin where the bow was held below the hand. Fingers controlled the tension of the horse-hair.
In the 18th century, the violin took over from the VIOL as people preferred the louder sounds that it produced.
If you are interested in making sounds on the DOUBLE BASS then you need an INSTRUMENT and SHEET MUSIC

Cello Sounds
There were a number of cellists through the ages who have created great sounds on the cello.
Here are just a few:
Jean-Pierre Duport (1741-1818), Pablo Casals (1876-1973), Pierre Fournier (1906-1986) ,Jacqueline du Pré (1945-1987), Julian
Lloyd Webber (1951) picture to right
Cello sounds can be heard in a variety of settings which gives the player interesting music to play. You can find cellists playing
~ in the orchestra: there are a variety of different orchestras - a symphony orchestra has 8 - 12 players
~ as a soloist: in concerto with orchestral backing or on own
~ in chamber music: traditional string quartets and other ensembles like trios, quintets
~ popular and jazz music: this is less common than classical music
~ bluegrass and folk music
If you have not got a cello you may want to learn to create some great sounds or know someone who does. Then you need a CELLO

Sound-Colours of a Violin
Violins vary in quality and a violinist varies the wrist movement as he or she presses on the strings and on the way the strings are stopped. Hence the tone or sound-colour varies depending on instrument and player.
If a player wants a warm tone then vibrato is used ie the wavering of fingers on the strings. If a player wants a loud, harsh sound, he plays with the bottom of the bow, called a heel. A hollow sound can be obtained by drawing the bow very near the bridge. A softer tone can be produced by placing a mute ( small piece of wood or metal that lessons string vibrations)on the bridge. An effect called pizzicato is produced by plucking the strings with the fingers instead of using the bow.
If you have a violin you are most likely using these techniques. But why not grab some MUSIC to really enjoy yourself.
If you have not got a violin you may want to learn or know someone who does.
Then you need a VIOLIN
And LESSONS
Have fun with the sound-colours of a violin.
